HI TOOL® Harmonic Isolation Tool vibrational shock reduction in a lateral well with RSS
Customer challenges
  • A Canadian operator sought a solution to reduce BHA damages
  • The 600 Series HI TOOL® (Harmonic Isolation Tool) was placed above the RSS to mitigate vibrations travelling into the RSS and LWD/MWD.  This placement was selected to prevent damage and eventual failure in the BHA

  • In this case the lateral section coupled with the troublesome formation was pinpointed as the prime cause of vibrational shock. The HI TOOL® replaced a stabilizer above the RSS in order to reduce vibrational shock and to prevent damage
Value to client
  • In this well, with the HI TOOL® above the RSS, both axial and lateral vibrations were greatly reduced. The shocks remained low and consistent throughout with the HI TOOL® allowing the 1,830-meter section to be drilled successfully without BHA failure. The RSS performed well, experienced minimal wear, and responded to all downlink commands
  • Reduction of axial and lateral vibrations
  • Smooth drilling throughout section with no NPT
