Recovering gas, harvesting rainwater, and integrating solar power for low-carbon production
In Colombia, Expro and Ecopetrol transformed a well test into a low-carbon, early production facility, integrating gas recovery, solar power, and rainwater to reduce emissions, cut costs, and deliver long-term value.
Our partnership with Ecopetrol turned a short-term well test into a fully operational, sustainability-focused early production site. Located in a remote area without central infrastructure, the project required a flexible, low-impact solution to support the efficient and responsible development of a major asset.
A key innovation was the recovery and reuse of gas, which was redirected to power boilers and support production instead of being flared. This reduced emissions while improving efficiency, with up to 40% of gas reused. Solar power was also integrated to support site operations.
Rainwater harvesting further reduced environmental impact by supporting steam generation and minimizing freshwater use. These initiatives are delivering around 1,200 tonnes of CO₂e savings annually, saving approximately $360,000, and generating more than 700,000 barrels of crude oil while creating local jobs and building in-country expertise.
