Conductor Driving: A Sustainable Solution for Environmental Zones
Customer challenges
  • DNO Norge engaged with Expro’s Well Construction team in 2023 for technical expertise in planning an exploration well scheduled for 2024. The well's location was within a protected marine species breeding zone, prohibiting seabed discharge and restricting open-water drilling
  • Driving the conductor string to depth was viewed as the best practical solution
Expro Excellence
  • Expro recommended conductor driving, a method less common in Norway due to its firm formations but widely used in neighboring regions.  Expro leveraged its global conductor driving expertise to support communication between the operator, D & W consultancy, and environmental regulators, ensuring approvals were obtained without delays
  • After analyzing the initial geotechnical data, Expro proposed a tailored solution incorporating a Hydraulic hammer, specialist conductor handling and make-up configuration, and enhanced driving shoe technology to improve penetration efficiency
  • Given the critical need to secure the 30” conductor and maintain well integrity, DNO Norge and well expertise requested contingency plans. Expro developed a drill and drive contingency package, featuring a connection-specific mud saver and assisted in the selection of the needed BHA for cleaning out the conductor and formation to depth. This setup allowed for seamless handling of drilling fluids and cutting within the rig’s licensing constraints
  • Expro’s historical operational knowledge and solutions supported communication between the operator, D&W consultancy and governmental environmental bodies. Without approval from the governmental body, operations could have been significantly delayed while anappropriate solution was prepared and approved
Value to client
  • Leveraging its global conductor driving expertise, Expro provided tailored solutions ensuring compliance with environmental regulations while maintaining operational efficiency
  • Successful execution of conductor driving with contingency plans in place
  • Deployment of the proper hydraulic hammer needed for the on-rig solution
  • Reduced noise and vibration impact, aligning with environmental standards
  • Streamlined operations, enhancing efficiency while mitigating risk
