Case Study

Multi-service abandonment solution reduces critical path time in deepwater P&A campaign

In Brief

Integrated multi-service abandonment solution reduces critical path time and improves efficiency across a deepwater P&A campaign

Customer Challenges

  • A three-well deepwater Gulf of Mexico P&A campaign required reservoir isolation, completion recovery and permanent barrier installation across a combination of well architectures
  • The programme combined lower abandonment activities with subsequent upper abandonment and permanent rock-to-rock barrier installation and validation
  • The customer required a coordinated approach to Well Access, Completion Recovery and Barrier Assurance while reducing rig time, intervention activity and execution risk

Expro Excellence

Well Access & Intervention

  • Expro provided dedicated well access equipment supporting 33 coiled tubing and 10 wireline runs during the 54-day lower abandonment campaign, alongside contingency capability for execution through the rig BOP

Completion Recovery

  • Partial completion recovery on two wells enabled progression to upper abandonment without a more extensive tubing recovery programme, with production tubing recovered to the planned cut depth

Barrier Assurance

  • Expro configured a bespoke single-trip barrier assurance BHA combining CX Bridge Plug, SuperFlow and BRUTE Force Packer technologies with Lee Energy Systems’ MPX casing expansion and Gator hydro mechanical perforating system
  • The integrated system enabled multiple barrier operations in a single deployment, eliminating dedicated cleanout runs and conventional explosive perforating while maintaining flexibility to establish additional circulation paths where required
  • Qualified 500 ft rock-to-rock barriers were installed above the 9⅝-in and 13⅜-in casing shoes without section milling or cut-and-pull operations

Value to Client

  • Three wells successfully abandoned using a coordinated multi-service execution model
  • Nineteen operational trips were eliminated and approximately 170 critical-path hours removed from the abandonment programme
  • Permanent barriers were installed without section milling, cut-and-pull operations, explosive perforating or dedicated cleanout runs Reduction of rig time
  • All primary barriers were successfully placed and validated without secondary cement remediation
