Case Study

Legacy wells, new energy. Repurposing well testing for geothermal power

In Brief

Transforming legacy wells into new energy through geothermal innovation.

Region

Customer Challenges

  • The client had a long-term plan to repurpose their hydrocarbon wells into geothermal water producers
  • The client needed to characterize reservoir performance and fluid properties, and assess the potential for baseload power generation
  • Expro was the incumbent for well testing operations and known for successful project execution
  • They approached Expro for an engineered solution to meet their geothermal well testing objectives

Expro Excellence

  • Expro had been successful in delivering previous unconventional well tests with the client
  • Our flexibility in engineering solutions, experience and expertise was highlighted by our selection
  • An engineered temporary well test package was delivered to evaluate the reservoir. Developing a cost-effective solution to integrate the brine turbine into the package
  • Liquid rate measurements were provided by Expro’s non-intrusive clamp-on SONAR flow surveillance meters
  • Surface measurements were combined with bottom-hole data acquisition and fluid analysis
  • On-site sample collection and analysis enabled critical water properties to be measured at the well site under varying conditions
  • Real-time data-to-desk always enabled visibility and control of operations, and allowed the test to be optimized for safety and well performance
  • Expro’s ability to manage scope changes and flow conditions enabled the successful delivery of the project

Value to Client

  • A complete set of flowing well data and fluid analysis were captured, analyzed and delivered to our client
  • A total of 23,000 cubic meters of water was produced with a maximum flow rate of 700 cubic meters per day managed at surface then reinjected into the formation
  • Total flowing hours exceeded 6,500 hours over a 50-day test period, with no Non-Productive Time (NPT) or HSE events
  • Personnel safety was prioritized by using an engineering package to reduce crew size and fit-for-purpose equipment on-site
  • The data collected informed our client on future development plans and environmental impacts
