Expro’s Fluid Analysis Centre: 50 Years of Subsurface Intelligence

27th August 2025

Expro’s Fluid Analysis Centre (FAC) has steadily built a reputation as one of the most reliable partners in the global energy industry. As it marks its 50th anniversary, the FAC continues to be the technical backbone behind critical reservoir decisions, offering operators not just data, but deep analytical insight into subsurface conditions.

While its role may be behind the scenes, the impact of Expro’s FAC is anything but subtle. Every well test, every reservoir model, every strategic field decision informed by its data reflects the trust placed in this facility over five decades.

As Expro looks ahead to the future - integrating digital workflows, expanding global reach, and supporting the energy transition - the FAC will continue to play a vital role in ensuring fluid intelligence is always on tap.

From humble beginnings to global influence

Established in 1975, Expro’s FAC has been based in Reading, UK, for five decades. Recently relocated to a state-of-the-art facility, it serves as the hub of a worldwide laboratory network, anchoring Expro’s reservoir fluids expertise across the globe.

From the North Sea to the Middle East, and across South America to Southeast Asia, the FAC extends its global presence through a network of strategically located satellite laboratories. Positioned in the United States, Brazil, Norway, Algeria, Angola, Congo, Namibia, Qatar, and Iraq, these centers deliver rapid turnaround times and tailored regional support, reinforced by the FAC’s industry-leading technical expertise.

The services that power subsurface clarity

What makes the FAC uniquely valuable is its breadth and depth of expertise across the fluid’s lifecycle. Services include:

  • PVT studies: Industry-leading pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) analysis - from sample validation and recombination to C36+ composition and complex expansion/vaporization tests.
  • Fluid sampling: Expert handling of single-phase reservoir, wellhead and surface samples, as well as guidance on optimal sampling for the desired analytical program.
  • Flow assurance: Quantifying the production challenges that a reservoir fluid will present, whether that be wax, asphaltenes or scaling.
  • Comprehensive analysis: Chemical and microbiological testing, including specialist mercury analysis in gases, oils, and water.
  • Enhanced oil recovery (EOR): Delivering testing programs to evaluate the efficacy of planned EOR campaigns, whether using natural gas, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide.

Client support & training: Whether onsite or remote, the FAC provides clients with training, technical advice, and tailored interpretation to enhance reservoir understanding.

Built for  the future

The FAC is equipped to meet the evolving demands of the energy industry, with the capability to analyze fluids from even the most extreme reservoirs. Through the high pressure high temperature capabilities, specialist services in Sulphur Speciation, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), and Onsite PVT, it stands ready to meet the industries need while remaining dedicated to scientific principles.

Investing in new techniques and equipment to support clients in CCUS, Hydrogen and Geothermal ensures the FAC remains relevant and at the forefront of the Energy Transition.

Education

Education and training have always been central to the FAC’s success. This commitment is reflected not only in building a world-class team of analysts, but also in sharing knowledge with Expro's clients. From promoting best practices and explaining analytical processes to supporting young oil professionals through collaboration with organizations such as SPE, the FAC continues to champion learning and professional growth at every level.

A legacy built on precision - and poised for what's next

As the energy sector continues to evolve, the need for trusted, high-quality fluid intelligence has never been greater. Expro’s Fluid Analysis Centre enters its sixth decade not only as a pillar of technical excellence, but as a symbol of resilience, adaptability, and innovation. From supporting safe, efficient field operations to shaping the reservoir strategies of tomorrow, the FAC’s role remains indispensable - quietly leading from the front, one data point at a time.

“The FAC has continually evolved over the past five decades – from supporting conventional oil and gas developments to pioneering analysis for CCUS, CO2 injection, hydrogen, and geothermal projects. I have always been very proud of the team’s adaptability and innovative approach meaning we continue to be essential to our clients and at the forefront of the industry.” Neil Winkworth, Expro Global Laboratory Manager, Fluids Analysis Centre
