In the retrofit environment, CaTS™ can be conveyed into the well using conventional slickline services and tooling. The gauge is typically suspended below a gauge hanger set in a nipple profile, or alternatively can be set below a packer or bridge plug. Where monitoring of several discrete zones is required in a single well, multiple CaTS gauges can be installed with signals being multiplexed downhole and then decoded at surface by a multi-channel receiver.

The signal is collected at surface by making an electrical connection to the wellhead. The EM signal is collected, decoded and stored to memory in the topside receiver. Alternatively data to desk can be achieved by interfacing the topside receiver to the client’s SCADA system or alternatively a stand-alone GSM link can be established.

Where an operator may have to monitor production performance from a field of tens or even hundreds of wells on a daily basis, it simply isn’t practical to visit each wellsite everyday. By retrofitting CaTS into a selection of key wells in different segments of the reservoir and setting up real-time CaTS data transmission to the office, it is possible to receive vital early warning signs of any reservoir performance or production problems. Using CaTS enables a proactive approach to be taken to maximise recovery and minimise production downtime.

In wells that may have a PDG system installed in the well that has failed, then there is a special application of the CaTS technology that uses the cable of the failed PDG as a high performance signal path leading to optimised performance of the wireless transmission system.
