Apprenticeship Week: Ewan Richardson

2nd March 2020

Meet Ewan Richardson, Foundation IT Apprentice at Expro. Ewan is in sixth year at school and elected to take part in the two-year Foundation Apprenticeship at North East Scotland College as one of his subject choices. After successfully completing the classroom based first year, studying computer science, Ewan joined Expro to put what he learnt into practice by supporting our IT team for a year.

Tell us a bit, what about ‘a day in the life’ at Expro looks like for you?

For me, every day at Expro can be different and often involves a wide range of tasks. Sometimes I work as part of an operations team to help solve other Expro personnel issues as part of the IT service desk. Other days, my projects require me to look into the back-end servers to try to resolve physical issues or gain more of an understanding on how the servers work across the business.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most about the job is helping people. I am able to solve issues others might find impossible to fix. It gives me gratitude and makes me feel a great sense of accomplishment.

What is something surprising you’ve learned?

I was surprised to learn the difference between the working environment and the school learning environment. I find the workplace at Expro relaxed and enjoyable to work in; whereas I felt school was a more disciplined and regulated approach to my development.

Has this apprenticeship helped shape your future career?

The apprenticeship has helped me gain a clearer understanding of what working as apart of a computing team is all about. The experience I have gained at Expro has helped me to understand what path I want to take in the future.
